Union Hill/Mill Stream Walkway – Waihi, Hauraki

It’s crazy just how long you can live somewhere and not even know the wonders that are right on your doorstep! I’ve lived in this area for years and never thought that our neighbouring town of Waihi would be so full of stunning, well-kept walks perfect for an after work stroll or weekend wander! Whether you’re a local or passing through on your way to/from Auckland, Waihi is definitely worth a stop!

Trees growing up a concrete building

Union Hill and Mill Stream Walkway is the latest walk I’ve embarked on, there are so many hidden treasures to find along the way and always something magical to capture the imagination. As part of the 19th – 20th century exploration of the Hauraki goldfields you’ll find mysterious historical ruins along the way. Rare cyanide tanks tower high above the trees and derelict kilns and drives seem to blend in with the surrounding bush land. There really is no direct path I can lead you on when it comes to this part of the Waihi walk – just ensure you keep to the paths and let your curiosity lead you and you’ll discover!

Dog on a muddy forest path

Once you’ve explored the Union Hill area, head toward Kenny Street, head left and walk along the road for a few short steps till you come to a large open grass area. Follow the left side of the park till you reach the Mill Stream Walkway. It’s easy to spot thanks to the well-signposted pathways and the stream you’ll be following. Both of these walks are dog friendly and as long as your pup is well-behaved there are lots of opportunities for off-lead runs!

The first thing you’ll notice is a dark bamboo walkway, this really has to be seen to be believed, it’s almost like you’re on another planet once you’ve stepped inside this towering city. Spend some time in here, with your vision impaired see what you can discover when your other senses kick in! Following the path, you can take a left to go down to a spot in the stream where you can wade in the water and watch the cascades. The dogs loved this part – as you can see! This would be the ideal spot for a picnic on a warm evening, just don’t forget to take everything home with you.

The rest of the walk is just as beautiful with two small wooden bridges crossing the stream and leading you back to a kissing gate near where you started your walk. Head left again and you’ll end up back by your car. Not a long or hard walk by any stretch of the imagination, Union Hill and the Mill Stream Walkway are perfect for all who enjoy getting out in nature and seeing all NZ has to offer, even in these quaint small towns!
