#1 New Zealand Winter Destination: Roys Peak – Wanaka – South Island

roys peak

Only 6kms for Wanaka you’ll wander through paddocks and well maintained alpine tussock to reach the ridge. From here the view of Lake Wanaka, Mount Aspiring and surrounding peaks will be worth every step! Ensure you have a whole day dedicated to the walk as all up it’ll take you 5-6 hours! If this unbelievable shot by Shaun Jeffers doesn’t make you want to book a plane ticket straight away, nothing will! Pack your backpack and head off to Roys Peak this winter!

#2 New Zealand Winter Destination: Kerosene Creek – Rotorua – North Island

Kerosene Creek

Winter is the ideal time to head to Rotorua, Taupo and the surrounding areas! The geothermal activity in these parts really come into a world of their own in the colder months! Check out my favourite spot Kerosene Creek for a natural, hot water experience in the bush! Want a little more info on this beautiful spot, we’ve written an in depth blog over HERE!

#3 New Zealand Winter Destination: Onsen Hot Pools – Queenstown – South Island

onsen hot pools

When you think of South Island hot pools you instantly think Hanmer Springs! This year though head to Queenstown for the weekend and experience the ONSEN Hot Pools. Overlooking the Shotover River canyon from high on the cliffs your private spa has a view you will never forget! Filled with a mixture of pure spring water and lake water these hot steamy pools will take you to a whole new level of relaxation and comfort!

#4 New Zealand Winter Destination: Dunedin – Otago – South Island

snow in dunedin

Not wanting to stray too far from a bustling city on your winter getaway? Dunedin is a hub of activity at any time of the year and a little snow won’t stop that! With beautiful scenery both in and out of the city Dunedin has so much to offer everyone. Head out to the Peninsula, take a tour of the stunning buildings and warm up in a George St cafe. Just don’t forget your puffer jacket so you can really fit in!

#5 New Zealand Winter Destination: Mount Ruapehu – Manawatu-Wanganui – North Island

Snowboarding

Don your skis or snowboard and head out to Mount Ruapehu this snow season! Ruapehu is an active stratovolcano at the southern end of the Taupo Volcanic Zone, located pretty centrally those within the North Island are never too far from this winter destination hot spot!
