With the Christmas period comes, for many of us, a long-awaited break. A time to spend with family and friends, a time to catch some rays, nap under flowering pohutukawa trees, feast on fish and chips at the beach, live in our jandals and togs and cover ourselves in sunblock and mozzie spray! There is nothing quite like a Kiwi summer, so why not head out and explore all that our country has to offer these Christmas holidays!

To truly get a taste of the Kiwi Christmas holidays, stay away from the big hotels and cities and head out to the coast or the country. Tramp through the bush with good mates, sleep under the stars, swim in our beautiful lakes and attempt to surf in the waves.Christmas Holidays NZPack up your car or Mighway camper, set a destination, download the Rankers Official Camping NZ app and head on your way. Take plenty of healthy treats with you and keep cash in your car – our roads are filled with fruit and vegetable stalls with honesty boxes that offer some of the most delicious, freshest produce you can find. Wander your way through farmer’s markets, craft markets and vintage fairs to sample all of the finest local talent available during the busy Christmas holiday period.

Don’t forget your camera, you’ll want to document everything you come across. Yes, it’s the Christmas holidays – the roads will be busier. Use this as an excuse to take the longer route instead, discover places you may have once missed. Document and photograph it all. Make sure you fill up your toiletry bag with little luxuries, life on the road can sometimes take its toll and stopping off for a nice swim and a shower can perk you right back up! Beaches and public pools often have showers and they make great pit stops on any journey! (try and find yourself eco-friendly toiletries if you’re bathing in lakes and rivers!). Pop some hand sanitiser and toilet seat covers in your bag to help you stay clean and hygienic on your trip!Christmas holidays NZBeing an AA member will help you when it comes to getting yourself out of tricky transport situations, determined Christmas holiday drivers may not be so willing to stop and help you if your car is overheating at 10pm – but the AA and a tow will only be a phone call away!

Get yourself a good rain jacket and waterproof bag, we all know that our Kiwi summers, and the Christmas holidays in particular, have a tendency to get a little bit wet sometimes. Being prepared will ensure no amount of rain can put a dampener on your trip.Christmas Holidays NZDon’t be afraid to ensure you’re comfortable, bring blankets, pillows, fold out chairs, camping cutlery, a good book or five and your favourite slippers for an evening around the campfire.

These Christmas holidays are yours to do with what you will, just abide by the laws and rules, “take only photographs and leave only footprints”. Experience a true Kiwi summer this year and you won’t regret it for a moment. We’d love to see your favourite Christmas holiday moments, share them over on Instagram and #luggagefriends for a feature on our social channels!
